Walter Dixon

Walter Dixon is from Mullins, South Carolina. He holds several advanced degrees from the University of Southern California, and the Royal College of Music, London. As a Vocal Fellow at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California, he worked with Sherrill Milnes, Giorgio Tozzi, and Gwendolyn Koldofsky. He also attended the prestigious Tanglewood Music Center twice, as a Vocal Fellow, studying with Phyllis Curtin, and performing with Seiji Ozawa and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. At the Aldeburgh Festival, England, he sang the title role of Alessandro in Mozart’s Il Re Pastore, as well as the role of Lysander in Britten’s opera, A Midsummer Night’s Dream under the direction of Ileana Cotrubas, Tomas Vásáy, and Steuart Bedford. Among his operatic roles are Tamino, Ottavio, Lenski, and Tom Rakewell. While at the Royal College of Music he was also awarded the Ricordi Prize for Opera. Among his other Britten roles he has sung the Madwoman in Curlew River with the Utah Opera. Recital work has taken him from California to Boston and from Australia to Austria, while his oratorio performances range from the requiems of Verdi (with Sir David Willcocks) and Mozart (with Christopher Hogwood) to contemporary works such as Dominick Argento’s The Revelation of Saint John the Divine with the Harvard University Men’s Glee Club. He has taught on the faculties of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, the University of Massachusetts, Harbor Campus, Boston, and the University of Western Australia, Perth, as Artist in Residence.
