Madeleine Gray

Madeleine Gray was born in New York, but has divided most of her life between Los Angeles and Great Britain. She was educated at Loyola Marymount and Cambridge Universities, and subsequently studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in the United Kingdom, where awards included a major scholarship from the Peter Moorcs Foundation and the D’Oyly Carte award.

She made her debut with The Washington Opera in 1999 singing Rebecca Nurse (The Crucible), a role she repeats for Lyric Opera Cleveland this year; other roles include Orfeo (Orfeo en Euridice), La Zia Principessa (Suor Angelica), Hippolyta (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), 3rd Lady (The Magic Flute), Marcellina (Le Nozze di Figaro), Annina (La Traviata), Baba (The Medium – a performance which won the “Pick of the Fringe” award from the Buxton Festival). She has sung for companies such as The Washington Opera, Scottish Opera, Opera North (UK), Western Opera Theater (San Francisco Opera’s touring company), The Opera Company, European Centre for Opera and Aldeburgh Festival among others. She will make her debut with Baltimore Opera later this year singing 4th maid in Elektra.

She is also a frequent recital and concert performer, and has performed as recitalist and concert soloist across Britain and Europe as well as at the Tanglewood Festival (USA) and The Banff Festival for the Arts (Canada). Gala performances include appearing as a featured soloist in the Flemish Opera Orchestra’s “Night at the Proms” series as well as participating in the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s 70th Birthday Tribute to the late Leonard Bernstein.
