Jerry Wong

Jerry Wong has performed as soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States, and in Finland, France, Italy, and Japan. Winner of the Bartók-Kabalevsky-Prokofiev International Piano Competition and the IBLA Grand Prize Competition in Italy, Mr. Wong’s appearances this season include Carnegie Recital Hall and the United Nations in New York. Additional recitals include New York University, Radford University, and the University of Arkansas. Last season, he performed as winner of the Manhattan School of Music Concerto Competition under the eminent conductor Zdenek Macal. In his native state of California, the Orange County Register praised him for “his clean technique, forthright sound and straightforward approach to classical textures” and for “giving a performance which turned the concert into an unforgettable event”.

Mr. Wong’s wide ranging musical activities have included collaborations of every variety. He made a world premiere recording of Jaakko Kuusisto’s Piano Trio #1 for Finnish National Radio and was invited to the Pacific Music Festival in Japan, where he performed a duo recital with Vienna Philharmonic concertmaster Werner Hink. Last month, he had a successful concert tour of Illinois with trumpeter Joe Burgstaller. Mr. Wong performs regularly with his wife, pianist Stephanie Shih-yu Cheng, as the Pèlerinage Duo. They have appeared in such prestigious settings as the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and the Kravis Center in Florida. In addition to his various commitments as a performer, he has written liner notes for severl recordings produced on the Music Minus One label.

Mr. Wong graduated from the Peabody Conservatory in 1996 under the tutelage of Ann Schein. While completing his studies at Peabody, he held a Graduate Assistantship in Accompanying and was a prizewinner in the Yale Gordon Competition. He currently resides in New York City, where he is a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Manhattan School of Music. His principal teachers have included Menahem Pressler, Sara Davis Buechner, and Byron Janis.
