Andrew Balio

Andrew Balio has been principal trumpet of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra since 2001. Previously he was principal trumpet of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, under Zubin Mehta. He held the same position with the Mexico State Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Philharmonic.

Mr. Balio was born in Oberlin, Ohio, in 1965 and grew up in Madison, Wisconsin. He was a member of the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra for four years, and studied with Gene Young, then a visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Music. In the summers he attended the Young Artists Instrumental Program at Tanglewood. He won first place in the young artists competitions of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra in 1982 and of the Madison Symphony Orchestra in 1983.

Mr. Balio went on to the New England Conservatory of Music to study with Charles Schlueter, principal trumpet of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Others teachers include Adolph Herseth and Roger Voisin. He taught at the National Conservatory in Mexico and has presented master classes throughout Europe, South America, and Japan.

He was soloist with the Israel Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta and Gennady Rostdestvensky, as well as with orchestras in Prague and Milan. He has soloed and presented recitals in Europe, South America, the Middle East, and the U.S. He has recorded with his orchestras for RCA, Teldec, Angel, and Phillips.
