Howard Goldstein

Conductor, 1992

Howard Goldstein is Assistant Conductor of the Hopkins Symphony and teaching assistant to Frederik Prausnitz at the Peabody Conservatory, where he has completed his doctoral studies. His conducting has been seen and heard by millions of television viewers worldwide in the CBS-TV series The Equalizer. He has been a guest conductor with the Peabody Opera Workshop and was formerly Assistant Conductor of the Columbia University Orchestra in New York City.

Mr. Goldstein was a Fellow at the 1991 Conductor’s Institute, where he worked with Harold Farberman and Daniel Lewis. He has also been a pupil of Milan Horvat at the Salzburg Mozarteum and Hans Beer at the University of Southern California. In 1985 he was one of two Americans invited to the First International Arturo Toscanini Competition for Orchestra Conductors.

A native of Los Angeles, where he received his early training at USC and UCLA, Mr. Goldstein is also an accomplished violinist, having given the Los Angeles premiere of Lou Harrison’s Double Concerto. He was also a member of the Riverside Chamber Players in New York City.

Howard Goldstein’s interest in all forms of music has led him from the nightclubs of the Sunset Strip, where he was a guest violinist in a rock band, to the Library of Congress, where he has been researching the performance practice of Broadway musicals from the twenties and thirties.
