Richard Crawley

During the 1997-98 season, Richard Crawley returned to Opera Colorado to perform on the main stage as Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi and as Narraboth in Salome. During the summer of 1998, he appeared with Utah Opera Festival as Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi. During the 1998-99 season, he will make his deubt with Houston Grand Opera as Mr. Earlanson in A Little Night Music in a cast that includes Frederica von Stade and Evelyn Lear.

Mr. Crawley’s operatic engagements include the Santa Fe Opera, Opera Colorado, the Tri-Cities Opera, the Peabody Opera Theater and the Seagle Colony. Also an enthusiastic interpreter of contemporary opera, Mr. Crawley created the title role of the world premiere of Arnold Saltzman’s Tòuro at Lisner Auditorium in Washington, D.C. in May 1995; and in April 1996 he created the role of Julius Rosenberg in the premiere of Ari Benjamin Meyer’s Defendant’s Rosenberg at the Peabody Conservatory.

As an orchestral soloist, Mr. Crawley has performed with the New Mexico, Baltimore, and Syracuse Symphony Orchestras, the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica, the Handel Choir of Baltimore, Concert Artists of Baltimore, and the Finger Lakes Symphony Orchestra. He has received high critical acclaim for his interpretation of the Evangelist in the Saint Matthew and Saint John Passions, as well as the Christmas Oratorio of J.S. Bach.

A native of upstate New York, Mr. Crawley holds degrees from the Peabody Conservatory, Binghampton University and the Eastman School of Music. He spent two seasons as an Apprentice Artist with the Santa Fe Opera, and was a member of the Joseph and Loretta Law Artist Center of Opera Colorado where he sang matinee performances of Alfredo in La Traviata, Don José in Carmen, and the title role in Faust.
